Rise Early, Eat Clean, Live Long

Welcome to this week's edition of Public Health Without Politics. This week, we cover the latest health trends, from early wake-up routines to breakthroughs in diabetes treatment. We also dive into lab-grown dairy, tips for healthy aging, and the FDA's food dye debate.

Trending in Health this Week

  • The 4 a.m. wake-up—once a badge of honor for CEOs—is now a viral self-improvement trend embraced by early risers seeking focus, fitness, and an edge before the world wakes up.

  • The first pill for diabetes and weight loss showed positive study results.

  • Weed infused drinks are now on the market.

  • Long covid reveals how infections drive chronic disease—offering a breakthrough moment for US health policy.

  • Texas is emerging as a hub for psychedelics research, with growing support for their use in mental health treatment.

  • Which is better for weight loss, cycling further or cycling faster? Faster. High intensity interval training is best for weight loss.

  • Here’s a list of the healthiest junk food.

Our Food Future is Lab Grown

New food technology is changing how dairy is made. Companies like Better Dairy are using fermentation to create milk proteins—without using cows. It’s not what most people think of as “natural,” but it could be the future of food (and good for the environment).

How will this impact me? You might see new kinds of dairy products on shelves that are easier on the planet and maybe even easier on your body—especially if you have allergies or health concerns tied to regular dairy.

Super Agers Book Review: Secrets to a Long, Healthy Life

The Wall Street Journal reviewed Dr. Eric Topol’s new book Super Ages, which highlights how to prevent age-related diseases. A few highlights that may help you, according to the author:

  • Nothing surpasses regular exercise for promotion of healthy aging. And it’s never too late to start (start with weight lifting).

  • Healthy eating and a good night’s sleep are also key.

  • Diet is trickier. But there is limited agreement on what you should avoid: ultra processed foods (limited because they are not well defined and the studies are not conclusive yet).

  • Spending time in nature can bring diverse health benefits.

  • Music, optimism, hobbies, and human touch all promote healthy aging.

Media Spotlight: FDA's Dye Dilemma

In an op-ed for Tribune News, my colleague Lyle and I warned that the FDA’s quiet push to replace synthetic food dyes with “natural” alternatives could backfire—introducing new risks of food fraud, contamination, and supply chain instability.
